Revenants: Walkers of the Night

Revenant, sketched in a menacing pose with clothes and skin beginning to decay
Revenants, the restless undead, have long held a place in the annals of horror and supernatural folklore. From the early European traditions to modern interpretations in pop culture, the revenant is a chilling embodiment of the fear of death and the unknown. But what exactly is a revenant, and how has it figured into our collective imagination?

The term 'revenant' originates from the Latin word 'reveniens', which means 'returning'. Revenants are typically depicted as individuals who, after death, return to the world of the living, driven by a purpose left unfulfilled in life, or by a desire for revenge. Unlike ghosts, which are usually depicted as incorporeal, revenants are often represented as corporeal entities, closely resembling their living forms, though sometimes marked by the signs of decay befitting their grave-born nature.

Revenant tales have permeated many cultures over centuries. In medieval Europe, they were often depicted as walking corpses, rising from the grave to torment the living. In these narratives, revenants could spread disease, terrorize communities, and even bring about death, their unholy existence an affront to the natural order.

In more contemporary pop culture, the revenant has often been portrayed with a touch of tragic heroism. The film "The Crow", for instance, tells the story of a man who returns from the dead as a revenant to avenge his and his fiancée's murder. Similarly, in the popular video game series "The Witcher", the main character, Geralt of Rivia, encounters various types of revenants, each with their unique lore and characteristics.

The enduring appeal of the revenant in folklore and popular culture perhaps lies in our universal fascination with life after death. The revenant embodies the unsettling question of what happens when the dead do not rest, and the line between life and death is blurred.

Have you considered what might happen to you, good sir, if an actual revenant were to read this story and take umbrage with it? What would you do if said revenant were to come… for you!? And what if I’m a revenant? Look for me in the shadowed corners of your soul, to strike in the witching hours when desperation and reality intertwine in a miasma of unending decay. Blah ha haaaa!!!
